Catlin Mountains, Ferns, and Hairy Toes

Kia Ora!

Kiwi Consort (KC) met us in Dunedin, New Zealand and five of us drove the scenic route through the Catlin Mountains along the Pacific Coast south to Invercargill. We stopped at overlooks and waterfalls along the way.
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Next stop south would be Antarctica.

Ferns are an important icon in New Zealand. The national netball team is called the Silver Ferns. John Key, the current Prime Minister, is rumoured to favour changing the national flag from one symbolizing the former British Empire to one featuring the silver fern. I like this idea, rather like our good neighbors in Canada choosing the maple leaf as the icon for their national flag.

Hobbits, perhaps? Let's see those hairy toes!

No matter what part of the country you may visit, a LOTR (Lord of the Rings) tour is presented, except in the Catlins. Did Peter Jackson, native son and renowned movie director, deliberately film scenes all over the country on purpose to promote tourism? Probably not, but it is an effective tourist attraction. So we imagined all sorts of LOTR sites that could have been used, but were not.

Cheers,
Kiwi Traveler

But quickly before I do that, please allow me a moment to jump on my fern soapbox. For those who do not know, there are different varieties of ferns.Tennessee Wholesale Nursery
